Voluntary Beverage Consumption During Exercise

As different volumes of drinks were consumed, a calculation of fluid balance status relative to the situation before the dehydration allows easiest comparisons; with dehydration, individuals move into a negative fluid balance status, and by drinking they move towards a positive fluid balance status, and, only if the volume consumed is greater than the sweat loss do they become positively hydrated, and urine production and excretion moves them towards and/or into the negative fluid balance status again.

By consuming a greater volume, individuals give themselves a better chance of effectively rehydrating, and therefore the palatability of drinks, together with their composition, should be considered when free choice is given to individuals, as indeed occurs in most situations.
